How much RAM do you need for gaming in 2026?

7 min read · Updated October 2026

With memory prices high this year, it is worth knowing exactly how much RAM you need before you buy more. The short version is that 16 GB is enough for almost every game. This guide shows the numbers from the GamerKit game database, explains when 8 GB is still fine and when 32 GB makes sense, and covers the settings that matter more than capacity.

The short answer

Of the 30 popular games in our database (excluding Roblox titles), 28 list 16 GB or less as the recommended amount, and six list 8 GB or less. Only Rust (24 GB) and ARK: Survival Ascended (32 GB) recommend more. If you play mainstream games and keep a browser and chat app open, 16 GB is the right target. 32 GB is a choice for specific uses, not a requirement for gaming.

What the games ask for

Recommended RAMGames (examples from our database)
8 GBValorant, Rocket League, Minecraft vanilla, Fall Guys, Overwatch 2, Final Fantasy Resonance
12 GBEA FC 26
16 GBFortnite, CS2, Apex Legends, GTA V, Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, Warzone, Alan Wake 2, Gears of War: E-Day, Modern Warfare 4, Phantom Blade Zero, Planet Zoo 2
24 GBRust
32 GBARK: Survival Ascended

Minimum amounts are lower, but a minimum is the least the game will start with, not a comfortable experience. Several 2026 releases list 16 GB as the minimum itself, including Alan Wake 2, Black Myth: Wukong, Planet Zoo 2 and Phantom Blade Zero, so 8 GB is no longer safe for new big releases.

Video memory is different

Graphics cards have their own memory, which is separate from system RAM and cannot be upgraded. If textures look blurry or the game stutters when you turn, the cause is usually the graphics card's memory, and lowering the texture setting is the fix. Adding system RAM will not help with that.

Should you upgrade now?

Memory prices are elevated in 2026, so avoid paying for capacity you will not use. If you have 16 GB and your games run well, there is nothing to buy. If you have 8 GB and you struggle in recent releases, going to 16 GB is the upgrade that matters most. If you have 16 GB and are considering 32 GB, ask what specifically it would fix, and whether a faster graphics card or an SSD would help more. Our guide on why memory prices are high explains the market, and the Upgrade Path Advisor shows which part to improve first.

FAQ

Is 8 GB of RAM enough for gaming in 2026?

For esports titles, Roblox and older games, yes. For many newer releases it is not, and several 2026 games list 16 GB as the minimum. 16 GB is the safer choice.

Is 16 GB of RAM enough for gaming?

Yes. In our database of 30 popular games, 28 recommend 16 GB or less.

Do I need 32 GB of RAM for gaming?

Not for most games. It makes sense for heavy modding, streaming while gaming, creative work, and a few memory-hungry games such as Rust and ARK.

Does more RAM increase FPS?

Only if you were short of it. Once you have enough, extra capacity does not raise frame rates. Dual-channel memory and the right speed profile matter more.
